Summer/Fall 2019

Summer is both one of the quietest months but also one of the most important. As a small winery we must determine if finances and inventory justify a new crush. A new crush has been undertaken for calendar 2019. We will be making Zinfandel and Petite Syrah with grapes from the Sommer Ranch in Sonoma. I estimate the final yield will be around 350 cases for release in 2021. As the grapes ripen we must track the sugar content as well as the phenolic ripeness to determine a potential crush date for the harvest. Once the grapes have been harvested a multitude of issues must be faced; screening the grape harvest upon receipt, yeast species chosen for fermentation, barrels and equipment purchased and set aside. The smells and the sights of a harvest and crush are both exciting and intoxicating, and represents my favorite time of the year. I’m already looking forward to tasting these new wines as they are completed.
